Board Briefing: Institutional AI Readiness
Your institution’s AI posture in the four things a board actually asks: where we stand, what we’re exposed to, what we plan to do, and what we need from you. One page of substance per section; no jargon.
Fill each box in plain language a trustee with no technical background can act on. If a section runs long, you are briefing operations, not governance. Cut to the decision.
1 · Posture — where we stand today
An honest read of institutional readiness: what is in place, what is in flight, what is absent.
Current state of AI use, governance, and capability across the institution. Name what exists (policy, governance body, tools in use) and what does not yet.

2 · Exposure — what we are accountable for
The risks the board should know we carry, and how each is currently held.
Key exposures: data & privacy, academic integrity, equity, compliance (FERPA, ADA, state law), reputational, financial. For each material one, state the risk and who owns mitigating it.
3 · Plan — what we intend to do
The direction, sequenced and resourced. Include what the institution will not do.
Priorities for the next 6–18 months, in order. Name the accountable owner and the expected mission outcome for each, not the activity count.
4 · The ask — what we need from the board
The specific decision, endorsement, or resource this briefing requests.
Be explicit: approval of a strategy or policy, a budget authorization, endorsement of a risk posture, or simply informed awareness. State the decision you want the board to make today.
